The Pongal Celebration

Pongal is a Hindu festival and is one of the most popular festivals in India. Only Diwali and Christmas have as much of a following, although Pongal is not observed with as much fanfare. It is one of the noisier holidays.

Pongal is a three-day celebration dedicated to the Sun God. It is a festival spanning four days, and in 2018 it takes place from January 14th to 17th. Pongal is dedicated to farmers and is a way to thank them for putting food on our plates.

Pongal is very popular in South India, notably Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. People also celebrate it in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and elsewhere.

The first day of Pongal is known as Bhogi, and people mark the day with cleaning and cleansing. Old clothes and materials are tossed out, allowing you to start fresh with a clean slate.

The second day is Pongal. This is actually where Pongal officially begins. People cook milk and rice. The food is boiled (‘Pongal’ means ‘it boils’). This is then offered to temples, Gods, friends, and family. Sometimes crows and other auspicious animals are given the food.

The third day is Mattu Pongal. Cows and oxen are worshipped. It is a way to thank them as they too have played a role in cultivating the food by tilling the land and doing the heavy lifting.

The fourth and final day is Kanum Pongal. This day is for friends and family and farmers thank them for their help in the harvest. Pongal holidays are where farmers can celebrate their achievements.

The holiday is also famous for blockbuster movie releases as well as Jallikattu, or bull-taming. Overall, it is about having fun and enjoying time with the family.

This year, the Pongal festivities start on a Sunday. This means that you get an extra day to celebrate if you include the Saturday. It’s sure to be a wild five days.
