DPC – Dealing with Rejected Coupons and Promo Codes – Part I
What do you do when the website or store refuses your promo code? This is every avid couponer’s worst nightmare. Fear not. Here is how you should go about dealing with rejected coupons and promo codes:
Read the Coupon
We’ll start with what you should do before you purchase the item. Prevention is better than cure, after all. First, read the entire coupon twice out loud. This is the only way to make sure you understand what the coupon is saying. Yes, this means that you have to read the small text as well. Often times, the deal will be displayed in large bold font while the twists and terms are in a smaller font.
The terminology might be confusing, so don’t get caught off guard. Words like ‘transaction’ and ‘trip’ refer to the entire shopping list. If you see ‘purchase’ or ‘product’, it means one particular item.
Read the Store Policy
Next, you should read the store’s policy. Most major stores have policies that can be found online.
Although shopping with unlimited coupons seems fun, it’s usually not allowed. Stores may set limits on the number of coupons you can use or on the total amount of money you can save. If there is a limit on the number (5 coupons maximum), use the coupons that save you the most money. If it is a limit on savings (Rs. 50 maximum), then use coupons worth Rs. 50. You want to save as much money as possible.
It is better to be prepared and lower the chance of a mistake beforehand. This is why you should read the coupon and the policy first before you go shopping. Policies will change every once in awhile, so stay updated. A little bit of research can go a long way. Don’t let your coupon get declined.
Read the Product Description
Does the coupon match the item? Maybe you mistook the product for another and that is why the store declined your coupon.
Size also matters. A coupon advertising ‘10 Rs. off a 1 kg pack of salt’ can only be used for a 1 kg pack of salt. Sometimes, the store may already have the product on sale and will not allow additional coupons.
Some products only let you use one coupon on them. There are also certain products can’t have a coupon used on them, meaning the code you found was probably a fake. To learn more about these kinds of coupons, read 5 Coupons to Be Wary Of.
You want to make sure that there are no problems on your end. Now, on to dealing with the company.
Contact the Store
If you are unaware of any changes in the corporate policy, you can try contacting the store. Also, if you are not sure if a coupon or promo code has been used, contact the store. If you have tried using the coupon but it got rejected, contact the store.
Most big stores have phone lines set up with customer care for complaints or grievances. You can either call or email the store, although the latter might take you some time to get a response. Be polite during the mail or the call. If you lose your temper, the company is less likely to help you. Always keep a cool head.
Do not delete the emails that the company sends to you. Preserve them all. If the store emails their company policy, print it out and keep it in a safe place. You can bring it with you on the next trip to the place to resolve conflicts.
