5 Coupons You Need to Be Wary Of
One of our recent articles was about the 7 Kinds of Internet Coupons and Promo Codes. This had a list of various types of usable good coupons to save money or even acquire free products. Now, we look at the flipside of things. Here are the five coupons that you need to be wary of:
The first coupons that you should be careful of are those that have passed their expiration date. Checking for validity is actually the fourth of the 9 Steps in the Online Couponing Process. Make sure you double check the time of expiry for the promo code or coupon. It is a point we can’t stress enough.
You should know that coupons are valid up to their expiration date. If a coupon expires on 30th September 2017, you can use it on the midnight of that day but not on the day after (1st October 2017).
Stores most likely won’t accept expired coupons but it doesn’t hurt to ask anyway. Just make sure you’re not too far off. One or two days late may be okay. One month is definitely not.
‘One Per Purchase’ Coupons
Coupons like these are the tricky ones that tend to confuse people. In reality, they are really not that hard to understand.
Every item that you buy is a purchase. If you see coupons that have ‘limit one per purchase’ or a similar wording, it means that you are only allowed to use one coupon for the particular product. It doesn’t matter if you want to use two ‘20% discount’ coupons or a ‘Rs. 5 off’ coupon with a ‘Rs. 10 off’ coupon for the same product. Neither will be accepted by the store.
The way you get around this is by buying one product for each coupon. This lets you use the code for each item purchased. Of course, you shouldn’t buy more of the item just so you can use the coupon for it.
The next type of coupons that you should avoid is fake coupons. Ever since using coupons became prominent, there have been an influx of fraudulent coupons and false coupon websites emerging on the internet. Unfortunately, you as the customer are wedged between suspicious coupon sites and skeptical companies. Again, the best policy here is to check if the coupon is okay for use.
Pop-up offers, online banner ads with coupons, and emails with coupons have an extremely high probability of being fake. Don’t believe the coupons and promo codes that tell you to call the company and redeem them. These have a tendency to cause problems. Beware of such scams and look at the reviews for the coupons if you’re unsure.
Altering and digitally changing the wording of coupons, along with taking a Xerox of the coupon is also malpractice. Steer clear of any coupons that don’t meet the industry standards, like those for more than the actual price of an item. 50 rupees off a pen worth only 10 rupees doesn’t make any sense.

‘One Per Person’ Coupons
Then there are those coupons which are limited to one per person. This is normally done to prevent people from abusing the coupons or if the item is in short supply. This helps to prevent one person from clearing the entire shelf of the product and exhausting their stock. The technique used for ‘one per purchase’ coupons would fail here since you are the one person using more than one of the coupons.
For this, you may want to bring some friends or family members shopping with you or use the code under your friend’s account. You can then pay them back for the product later. Only do this if you are sure you need the product, though, as there is no reason to drag your friends into your situation.
The main problem here is that paying for coupons defeats the purpose of a coupon, which is to save you money. Second, this practice may actually be illegal. You should not fork over money for coupons, nor should you download some that you found on a shady internet forum. Never pay money for coupons or attempt to sell them yourself. Although you can share the coupons you have with friends and family, profiting off of coupons is not okay.
